You can quickly and seamlessly jump between different modules in this single app, carrying out actions that would otherwise be spread over several programs. It’s an asset management, raw development, and photo editing tool with extra bells, whistles, and drums. I think of each module is the lovechild of other software, inheriting the best aspects of each parent Lightroom, Photoshop, Affinity, Topaz DeNoise, and the Nik Collection all rolled into one.

I’ve used On1 alongside other software for many years, going right back to the early versions of Perfect Effects and Genuine Fractals. On1 is more of an all in one tool.I’ve been on the verge of permanently swapping from Lightroom and Photoshop to On1 Photo Raw for a long time. Additionally, you can use luminosity masks in every filter and you can use different blending options, and control effects by applying to highlights, shadows, different colors, etc. I actually think making is local adjustments is easier and more precise in On1 than using the control point technology in Nik, others may prefer Nik. What I like about On1 is that everything has built in layers, so you can selectively apply filters. In Effects there are filters like tone enhancer (basically a comprehensive set of controls for making tonal adjustments which includes a curves adjustment), a color enhancer (basically a comprehensive HSB), a dynamic contrast filter, a B&W conversion filter, and a bunch of more specialized filters like glow, sunshine, lens flare, antique, vintage, lens blue, grunge, etc. The Effects module is the basic equivalent to the Nik filters. The current version of On1 Raw has a develop module that has all the basic sliders, including facilities for local adjustments.

Silver Effects Pro is excellent for B&W conversion. Color Effects, Viveza, and Silver Effects Pro have a lot of nice tools. I'm using On1 Raw as my primary editor these days. If you are using them as filters via LR or PS, I'm not sure On1 brings too much to the table. I used NIK for quite a while and then when it looked like it would fade into the sunset I quit. There is no need to come back to a exported.


Now, just because OP wanted to know NIK vs ON1 (I have no idea why), I want to tell that ON1 has a very large library of filters (and presets too) that could be be applied either locally via mask and brash, or globally with reduced opacity - everything like you described - during processing of RAW.
